Y

For this project, I was tasked with redesigning the host onboarding experience for a vacation rental platform. The problem emerged from both business metrics and user feedback – we were seeing a 40% drop-off rate during the listing creation process, and qualitative research indicated hosts found the experience overwhelming and unclear.

I began by taking a step back to truly understand the problem space. I conducted in-depth interviews with 12 hosts across different demographics – from first-time hosts to experienced property managers – to understand their motivations, pain points, and mental models. I also analyzed existing user journey maps, support tickets, and quantitative data from our analytics team to identify specific drop-off points.

A key insight emerged: hosts weren't just struggling with the technical aspects of creating a listing; they were experiencing uncertainty about how to present their space effectively to attract the right guests. Many felt overwhelmed by the number of decisions they needed to make without clear guidance on what would make their listing successful.

With this understanding, I created a framework for the redesign focused on three principles: progressive disclosure of information, contextual guidance, and celebrating milestones. I wanted to transform the experience from a lengthy form into a guided journey that built hosts' confidence.

I explored multiple design directions through sketches and wireframes, testing different approaches to information architecture and flow. One concept focused on a step-by-step wizard, another on a modular approach where hosts could complete sections in any order, and a third that combined elements of both with intelligent defaults.

I collaborated closely with content designers to craft supportive microcopy and with engineers to understand technical constraints. Together, we created interactive prototypes of two promising directions and conducted usability testing with 8 potential hosts.

The testing revealed that while hosts appreciated the flexibility of the modular approach, they felt more confident with guided steps that included examples and best practices. However, they also wanted the ability to save and return to their listing, addressing a key pain point in the original experience.

Based on these insights, I refined the design to create a guided flow with clear progress indicators, contextual tips from successful hosts, and the ability to save and return at any point. I paid special attention to moments where we could reduce friction, such as implementing smart defaults based on location and property type, and adding preview functionality so hosts could see how their listing would appear to guests.

For the visual design, I focused on creating a warm, encouraging atmosphere through typography and color choices, while ensuring the interface remained clean and focused. I added thoughtful micro-interactions to celebrate completion of key steps, reinforcing hosts' progress and building momentum.

After implementation, we saw significant improvements: the drop-off rate decreased from 40% to 18%, the average time to complete a listing decreased by 30%, and our post-onboarding survey showed a 45% increase in host confidence. Most importantly, listings created through the new flow received higher quality ratings from guests, indicating that better guidance led to better hosting experiences.

This project taught me the importance of balancing structure with flexibility, and how thoughtful design can transform a utilitarian process into an empowering experience that sets users up for success.
