For this project, I started by clearly defining the problem space. Our team identified that enterprise users were struggling with managing notifications across multiple Microsoft applications, leading to missed important updates and decreased productivity. Through our initial data analysis, we found that users were spending an average of 27 minutes per day just managing notifications, and 68% reported feeling overwhelmed by the volume.

To deeply understand this problem, I employed a mixed-methods research approach. I conducted 12 contextual interviews with users across different roles and organization sizes, created journey maps to visualize pain points, and analyzed telemetry data to identify usage patterns. This research revealed that users needed better filtering mechanisms, cross-application notification prioritization, and more contextual awareness in the notification system.

During the ideation phase, I collaborated closely with product managers, engineers, and content designers to explore multiple solutions. I created three distinct design directions: a centralized notification hub, an AI-powered prioritization system, and a contextual notification framework that adapted based on user activity. For each concept, I developed wireframes and user flows, then evaluated them against our research insights and Microsoft's Fluent Design principles, particularly focusing on how they created depth in information hierarchy and scaled across devices.

We tested these concepts through prototype evaluations with 15 users, collecting both qualitative feedback and quantitative metrics like task completion rates and satisfaction scores. The contextual notification framework performed best, with an 87% task success rate compared to 72% for the other solutions. Based on this feedback, I iterated on the design, refining the information architecture and interaction patterns.
